End Route / Return to Hub

Introduction

Onfleet Dashboard, Route Plans, Route Optimization, and the Mobile Driver App now support End Route functionality, aka Return to Hub or End Route At. Route Plans must be enabled and used for the End Route functionality to be tracked and displayed on the dashboard and mobile app. With this feature, Start Route will also display in the Dashboard, as well as be used to better track duration and mileage from start to end of a route.

Note - in the Onfleet Mobile Driver App only End at Hub or End at Worker’s address will be displayed to the driver. End at Drivers location and Start Route will not display in the driver app, as there are no additional tasks for drivers to complete.

End Route

When creating a Route Plan manually or running Route Optimization, Route Planners have been able to choose between three ending scenarios: Ending at the Driver’s location, the Driver’s home address, or the company Hub.

  • Ending a Route at a Hub:
    • Directs drivers to the appropriate hub, while tracking the travel distance and duration from the last task to the hub
    • Once at the hub, drivers switch to a new vehicle, pick up more packages for their next route, or end their day and leave the vehicle
  • Ending a Route at the Driver’s address:
    • Directs drivers to their home address, while tracking the travel distance and duration from the last task to their address
    • Once at their home, drivers can complete their Routes and have their vehicle ready for the next day.
  • Ending a Route at the Driver’s location:
    • The route ends once the driver completes the last assigned task
    • This allows drivers to stop working and the company to stop tracking drivers and distance

Additionally, with this new feature, Start Route or ‘Start Route At’ is also supported. When creating a Route Plan manually or running Route Optimization, Route Planners have been able to choose between three starting locations: Starting at the Driver’s location, the Driver’s home address, or the company Hub.

  • Start Route at Hub:
    • Tracks a driver’s travel distance and duration from the hub to the first task on the route.
    • A driver does not have any additional steps on the driver mobile app.
  • Start Route at the Driver’s address:
    • Tracks a driver’s travel distance and duration from their home address to the first task on the route.
    • A driver does not have any additional steps on the driver mobile app.
  • Start Route at the Driver’s location:
    • Time and distance is not tracked until the driver starts the first task of the route.
    • A driver does not have any additional steps on the driver mobile app.

End Route (and Start Route) in the Dashboard

What is End Route?

End Route, aka ‘Return to Hub,’ provides guidance to drivers of where the route should end. This feature impacts the Dashboard, Route Optimization and the Mobile app. We have also included a Start Route indicator in the Dashboard.

Why is End Route important?

Customers can now provide more direct guidance to drivers at the start and end of routes, as well as to collect information about the distance and duration for these legs of the route.

Why is Start Route important?

Customers can now provide more accurate service times, planning, and tracking the duration and distance from the planned starting location to the first task of the route. Start route currently only displays in the dashboard, not the mobile app, because currently drivers don’t have any additional steps to start tracking the duration and distance to the first task. They simply need to log into the app, go on duty, and start the first task in the route plan.

How does End Route work?

We have built off of the existing Route Plan and Route Optimization functionality to allow Planners to select where a route will start and end:

  • End at Hub (team hub)
  • End at Driver’s Address (driver’s address)
  • End at Driver’s Location (i.e. Anywhere = last task)

Business Goals

  • Improve operational efficiency
    • Ensures drivers return to specified hub or worker address promptly.
  • Decrease manual intervention from the Dispatch Managers communicating to the Driver
  • Accurate tracking of route activities
    • Captures driver work time and route miles from the last task to the Hub or Worker Address for better payroll and expense management.

Completing an End Route Task

Drivers with an End at Hub or End at Driver’s address will see the task in a Route.  The End Route task will be the last task in a Route.  The task is similar to a pickup or drop-off task and the Driver can complete the
